Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) Series

SCHOOLWIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT (SWPBS) SERIES 1

This learning series presents the critical components of Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS). The series is comprised of six modules addressing major topic areas:

  • Overview of SWPBS

  • Building Leadership

  • Behavioral Expectations

  • Teaching System

  • Acknowledgement System

  • Discipline System

Individual mini-modules in each topic area focus on key components of developing a SWPBS system. It is recommended that members of a building leadership team meet after each module to complete valuable application activities.

MODULE 1: OVERVIEW OF SWPBS

Module 1 of the SWPBS Learning Series provides background on the origins and research behind SWPBS. Benefits, key concepts and key features of SWPBS are introduced. Participants are provided with the opportunity to reflect on current schoolwide practices of behavior support in their setting.

MODULE 2: BUILDING LEADERSHIP

Module 2 of the SWPBS Learning Series focuses on key components of a SWPBS building-based leadership team.

MODULE 2 PART 1: TEAM COMPOSITION

In this module, participants are introduced to key ideas regarding a continuum of supports, establishing building-based SWPBS leadership teams, and related fidelity assessment items. Upon completion of this module participants will be able to recognize what comprises a SWPBS team including student, family and community members as key stakeholders on the team.

MODULE 2 PART 2: OPERATING PROCEDURES

In this module, participants are introduced to key team operating procedures and related fidelity assessment items. Upon completion of this module participants will be able to recognize the operating procedures of a SWPBS building-based leadership team.

MODULE 3: BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS

Module 3 of the SWPBS Learning Series focuses on key ideas for developing schoolwide behavioral expectations and a matrix aligned with those expectations by school settings and locations.

MODULE 3 PART 1: EXPECTATIONS

In this module, participants are introduced to key ideas regarding a continuum of supports, behavioral expectations as part of a schoolwide positive behavior support system, and related fidelity assessment items. Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to recognize guidelines for developing behavioral expectations including the role of student, family and community involvement.

MODULE 3 PART 2: MATRIX

In this module, participants are introduced to the basic purpose and use of a school behavior matrix aligned with schoolwide behavioral expectations and related fidelity assessment items. Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to recognize guidelines for developing a matrix of behavioral expectations by school settings and locations, including the role of student, family and community involvement in matrix development.
